In the pursuit of a healthier environment and more productive lives, clean Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) education stands as a fundamental necessity. Rotary's commitment to WASH programs traces back to its roots in 1907 when the Rotary Club of Chicago, led by Rotary International Founder Paul Harris, embarked on its first public service project – the creation of a public comfort station, also known as a public toilet.

The significance of access to clean water and sanitation cannot be overstated. When communities have these essentials, waterborne diseases diminish, children experience improved health and attend school more regularly, and mothers can redirect their time from carrying water to supporting their families.

Rotary's People of Action plays a pivotal role in WASH programs. They mobilize resources, forge partnerships, and invest in infrastructure and training, fostering lasting change. Let us explore some impactful projects that showcase Rotary's dedication to transforming lives through WASH initiatives:

  • Access to Toilets in the Philippines — Rotary clubs and partners collaborated to construct 222 toilets, six rainwater collectors, seven communal handwashing stations, and 20 bio-sand filters. This initiative provided over 1,000 people with proper toilet facilities and almost 600 people with a consistent supply of clean water.
  • Water for a Community in Papua New Guinea — Rotary clubs, in partnership with local organizations, established a rainwater harvesting and distribution center benefiting 4,000 people. Additionally, training programs were delivered to women and students in 35 schools, contributing to sustainable water solutions.
  • WASH in Guatemala Schools — In the town of Escuintla, Rotary clubs in Guatemala enhanced conditions for 1,793 children across 10 schools by providing toilets, washing stations, water tanks, and essential training.
  • Making Schools Healthier in Lebanon — Overcoming religious, cultural, and political divisions, all 24 Rotary clubs in Lebanon joined forces with government agencies and international organizations to deliver clean water to every public school in the country, fostering a healthier learning environment.
  • Water Supply in Tanzania — A dozen Rotary clubs collaborated with local partners to establish a water supply and delivery system for 1,500 people in the village of Kigogo, Tanzania. The initiative also included community education on system maintenance and hygiene.

Rotary's impact extends globally through The Rotary Foundation, which has invested in more than 2,000 WASH projects worldwide since 2013. The foundation supports volunteers of action in improving access to safely managed and basic WASH services in communities, schools, and healthcare facilities.

The Rotary-USAID WASH Partnership focuses on assisting communities and governments in planning, financing, and delivering safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services while managing water resources sustainably.

Rotary encourages members to participate in the WASH in Schools Target Challenge, promoting sustainable projects addressing water, sanitation, hygiene, and education needs in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, India, and Kenya.

With a mere $24, Rotary can provide one person with safe water. The impact of the Rotary-USAID partnership is evident in 123 schools in Ghana gaining access to basic sanitation and hygiene services.

In total, The Rotary Foundation's investment of $148 million globally underscores its commitment to water, sanitation, hygiene, and water resource management interventions.
