Wisconsin DNR Offers Support for Rotary Tree Planting

As you know, 2017-18 RI President Ian Riseley has set a challenge for Rotary during 2017-18:
  • To support the environment and sustainability, Rotarians are asked to work together to plan a tree for every Rotarian between July 1, 2017, and Earth Day 2018 (April 22, 2018).
As District Governor Elect, I ask that you and your club establish this as one of your goals for your club for the coming year.  I hope that you will take up the challenge to plant a tree for each of your members. This would be great work to support the environment and a wonderful legacy for future generations!
 
I was recently contacted by Wisconsin Regional Urban Forestry Coordinator Tracy Salisbury with an offer of assistance to Rotary Clubs.  The Wisconsin DNR Urban and Community Forestry program can provide technical assistance, community forestry contacts and fundraising ideas.

Rotary Challenge:
  • We understand that the Rotary International president has “challenged every Rotary club to make a difference by planting a tree for each of its members between the start of the Rotary year on 1 Julyand Earth Day on 22 April 2018.
 
Services Available: 
  • Wisconsin DNR has urban foresters across the state looking to connect with Wisconsin clubs to offer technical assistance, community forestry contacts and fundraising ideas as they embark on local community tree planting initiatives in response to the RI challenge.
  • Our staff has provided presentations to Rotary Clubs over the years on our programming and we are looking to expand our reach by making connections, facilitating planting/maintenance training, and planting planning.
 
We are not seeking funding (we receive state and federal funding support for our work and, in turn, offer numerous grants to communities and nonprofit organizations for community tree projects).
 
Track Record:
  • We have currently connected with the Rotary clubs in Oshkosh, WI, and will be providing technical and professional assistance to these groups as they plan their extensive and ambitious community tree planting initiative and would like to connect more broadly state-wide.
