The Rotary motto "Service Above Self" conveys the humanitarian spirit of the organization’s more than 1.2 million members worldwide. Strong fellowship among Rotarians and meaningful community and international service projects characterize Rotary. The numerous humanitarian, educational, youth and adult exchange programs and community development efforts are supported by Rotarians through their time and talent as needed enabling the advancement of world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty.
Rotary’s most ambitious program is its role in the eradication of polio in the world. Rotary members are key players in PolioPlus, a program dedicated to immunizing all the world's children against polio. Members assist in vaccine delivery, social mobilization and work with national health care organizations such as WHO, UNICEF and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Individual club community service projects focus on family, hunger, water, health, literacy and youth service.
Rotary was founded in 1905. District 9 was formed a short ten years later in 1915. William Zimmers (Milwaukee) was the first District Governor. Over the next 76 years, through several re-districting and re-numbering processes, communities such as Duluth, Wausau, Minneapolis, Green Bay, Madison, LaCrosse, Beloit and Horicon became part our district.
In 1957, the district was restructured under the guidance of DG George Markham Jr. (Oconomowoc) to become Rotary District 627. This included many of the cities and towns that remain in our district today. In 1991, under the direction of DG Frederick Luedke, it was renumbered to District 6270. In 1987, women were admitted for Rotary membership in the United States. In 1998, we welcomed Angela Rester Samse of Menomonee Falls as our first female District Governor. From 1915 to the present time, our tradition of strong leadership continues as a guiding force for the times ahead. As members, we volunteer our time and talent to further the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self" in order to make a positive impact on our communities and the world.
